United States Marine Corps in the Civil War: The Final Year (United States Marine Corps in the Civil War)
Published in Hardcover by White Mane Publishing Co. (November, 2000)
Author: David M. Sullivan
Average review score:

A very welcome contribution to Civil War studies
The United States Marine Corps In The Civil War: The Final Year opens with the elevation of Major Jacob Zellen to the commandant of the corps, over officers senior to him. This ended the policy of accession to that post by seniority and established the precedent of deep-selection. Civil War historian David Sullivan provides a complete account of the marines in the desperate, bloody fights at Mobile Bay, Honey Hill, Tulfinny Crossroads, and Fort Fisher. Active on all fronts during the last year of the war, marines also played a little-known role in the events surrounding the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Sullivan concludes his invaluable, highly recommended and very welcome contribution to Civil War studies with a detailed refutation of the spurious, erroneous, and derogatory conclusions that have hitherto obscured the historical record of Marine Corps involvement in the American civil war.

OUTSTANDING!
If you are into Marine Corps history this book is a must. Marines have participated in every military conflict in U.S. history and the Civil War was one of them. Very enjoyable, and something new to learn. Semper Fidelis!

The United States Marine Corps in the Civil War: The First Year (United States Marine Corps in the Civil Wara)

A Fresh View of Civil War History
This book is a must for civil war buffs and Marine history critics alike. It tells the truth of the History of the Marine Corps in the Civil War by relating the accounts of those who were there. Sullivan's 3 volume history was painstakingly researched over the course of 10 years. His history should be added to that taught by the Drill Instructors at the Marine Corps Recruit Depots. As the histories are taught now, it's as if the Marine Corps wasn't even there. Sullivan's work is excellent and pulls the reader along in a revealing light of one of the darkest chapters of our nations history.

My drill instructor was wrong--Marines were in the Civil War

Since the day after the first battle of Bull Run it was common knowledge that the U. S. Marine battalion was the first to cut and run from the battlefield, thereby causing the rout of the Union forces by the rebels. After 20 years of research that has uncovered new sources, David M. Sullivan proves that this stain on the battle flag of the Marines was a myth. Even the 90 day volunteer units had more training than the Marines, most of whom were recruited in the three weeks prior to the battle. They were essentially trained enroute to Manassas Junction. The young Marines were pushed back, four times, by superior and fresh forces. They rallied three of those times and re-entered the battle (equaling the record of any unit on the field that day).

This account is just one of dozens of similar stories that will give the Marine Corps the honor it deserves during the Civil War. Year by year, using official records, personal accounts and a myriad of sources he sets the record straight.

This is an epoch work by an outstanding researcher and a competent story teller. Must reading for all Marines, all friends of Marines and everyone that the Marines defend.

A War in Dixie: Alabama V. Auburn
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (18 September, 2001)
Authors: Ivan Maisel, Kelly Whiteside, and Pat Sullivan
Average review score:

Great Inside Look
What a great idea-- go inside both teams as they prepare for the greatest college football rivilary in the nation-- Auburn v. Alabama (or Alabama v. Auburn, whichever you prefer). It offers great insight of the workings of the coaching staffs as they get ready for the big game.

Roll Tide! and, well ok... war eagle.
Finally, a well-written book about the only college football rivalry that really matters. Other books have tried to capture the intensity of this series. But this one, with excellent material from folks like Howell Raines, tops them all. If you've ever tried, vainly, to explain what this game really means to someone not washed in Alabama-Auburn lore, then you know how difficult it is to do what these authors have done. An excellent book. Well done.

Wash Basin Street Blues: Nora in New York
Published in Paperback by Irish Amer Book Co (March, 1998)
Author: Mark O'Sullivan
Average review score:

Blues hits Gold
Despite a slow beginning, this chilling tale of courage and loyalty grasps the reader and urges them to read further into the complex plot. Though the gangsters were slightly stereotypical, they still were believable and convincing, therefore not altering the book much. The characters were all well portrayed and the protagonist is brimming with courage and determination, much admired the readers. Historically, it was fairly accurate, what with the immigration from Ireland to Ellis Island and Prohibition. But, there was more slightly Irish History than American History. With Wash-Basin Street Blues: Nora in New York, Mark O'Sullivan took a complicated story and weaved it into a marvelous novel that any book-lover should add to their collection.

"10 minutes?!?," you say. Joe Sullivan shows us the way.
... To my surprise I found the book very well laid out and ultra-conducive to high speed learning. To document my effort (and to have fodder for my lawsuit) I videotaped my Flash 5 session. After 7 minutes I began to think that this book really does deliver. At 9 minutes and 47 seconds I threw my hands up in the air and said "Its true, this book is amazing, I can learn this stuff in 10 minutes."...

Great hikes, great maps, great photos!
This book features an excellent range of hikes: from challenging longer hikes to short hikes suitable for families with kids, well known hikes and little known gems. The author has done a great job selecting hikes that explore the mountains and high desert of Easter Oregon, and his written descriptions are precise and descriptive. Sullivan's maps and photos add a lot to the book. A great book for hikers in Central or Eastern Oregon -- or those of you visiting.

101 Questions and Answers on Vatican II
Published in Paperback by Paulist Press (January, 2003)
Authors: Maureen O'Sullivan and Maureen Sullivan
Average review score:

Book for Curious Young Adults and for Reflective Old Timers
Sr. Maureen Sullivan, OP, has provided a very helpful aid for Catholic young adults who are attending courses in Catholic theology or participating in discussion groups. For people in this age grouping the Second Vatican Council (1962-65) is merely foggy history. However, it remains a pivotal event for understanding contemporary theological methods, biblical studies, liturgical renewal, spiritual self-understanding, approaches to ethical issues, as well as an overall sense of Catholic sensibilities. The information and insights that the author provides in "101 Questions about Vatican II" should provide the younger reader with a foundation for a better grasp of the issues still being explored and debated.

It is also the intent of the author to instill a sense of enthusiasm for the significance of this momentous event. As a Catholic priest ordained in early 1963 immediately after the conclusion of the first session of the Second Vatican Council I suspect that the original ecstasy of the Council and its aftermath will be difficult to replicated in the lives of those who did not share the agony of that period as well. For some members of an older generation this helpful guide may well provide memories that only now, some forty years later, fully reveal their significance.

The 21st Century Agent
Published in Audio Cassette by Strategic Coach Inc (June, 1998)
Author: Dan Sullivan
Average review score:

His vision of our industry is right on!
I have been in the life insurance business for 14 years and have worked in the agency system (as and agent and manager)for two of the largest mutual companies. I had been referred to this book by a friend of mine in the industry when I was disenchanted with direction of the agency system.

Mr. Sullivan's comprehension of the present agency system and the industry is only superceded by his vision of the direction of the future. He is right on!

So much so that I decided that it was time for me to move on and join a producer's group where I was totally independent without any conflicts of interest to my client. I am in total control of my destiny now. By the way, my production has conservatively doubled since I have moved on. I am more confident now, with a broader array of products, and most importantly no distractions.

Thank you Mr. Sullivan!

Sincerely,

Stuart B. Arakelian Registered Representative
